La Bum is a 10m long ketch, built in 1980 by Siltala Yachts in Turku, Finland. She’s classified as a motorsailer, for an unique combination of strong 80 hp engine and 62,8 sq. m. of sails.

HULL
GRP hull, handlaminated. Scantlings as approved by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping. Longitudinal stringers and transverse floors stiffening the hull. Structural bulkheads are teak faced marine plywood securely bonded to hull.
Iron ballast keel of 1.85 tons is fitted internally and encapsulated with glassfibre. Engine bed of glassfibre with steel inserts.
ENGINE
The engine is a Ford 2712 E 4-cylinder diesel engine developing 80 h.p. at 2500 r.p.m. The hydraulically operated gear box Borg Warner Velvet Drive Model 10-17-010 with ratio 2.10:1. The engine is fresh water cooled with a water cooled exhaust system.
Acid proof propeller shaft, bronze propeller 22” × 16”. Cathodic protection is fitted on all underwater fittings.
420 liters of diesel fuel is carried in two steel tanks one each side of engine room. The tanks are filled from side-deck fillers. Range: 630 nautical miles with sufficient safety margin.
DECK AND SUPERSTRUCTURE
Deck and superstructure of handlaminated glassfibre, with teak planking on deck and forecabin top. Wheelhouse doors, trimming and sliding hatch framings in teak. Windows are framed with rubber and glazed with toughened glass. Teak handrail with stainless steel stanchions. Gates on both sides. Four heavy duty fairleads and four bollards. Stainless steel stemhead fitting. Rubbing strake of teak.
STEERING
A CAPILANO hydraulic steering system is fitted with two steering positions, one in the wheelhouse and one on aftdeck. Turnover rate adjustable, normally 2,6 from lock to lock. Rudderstock and rudder of stainless steel. An emergency tiller is also supplied.
PLUMBING
Bronze valves installed on all thruhull connections below waterline. Polyethene fresh water tank with capacity 250 ltr. is fitted under the main saloon floor. The tank is filled from a filling connection on side deck and it is fitted with necessary venting.
P.A.R. water pressure system. Tubing in PVC. Electric water boiler Quick 30 ltr, supplied by engine cooling system. Schenker water maker producing 35 lt/hour. Everpure drinking water filtration system with UV lamp sterilization unit.
Stainless steel double sink in galley, ceramic basin in toilet. Telephone type shower in toilet and on the stern swim platform. The toilet compartment is fitted with marine electric flushing W.C, Vetus WCPS and black water holding tank Vetus WWS with capacity 42l.
An automatic electric bilge pump is fitted with manual override. Separate emergency manual bilge pump.
ELECTRICS
12V D.C. installation is divided in 3 separate circuits:
- Service circuit powering all 12V appliances with 3 batteries of 100 Ah each
- Engine circuit powering the engine starter with 2 batteries of 100 Ah each
- Bow circuit powering bow-thruster and anchor windlass with 2 batteries of 100 Ah each
Each battery has a MasterVolt shunt to control its conditions. These shunts, MasterVolt 50A battery charger and MasterVolt 1200 W inverter are connected through LAN to digital MasterVolt EasyView monitor. All 12V and 220V appliances are protected with automatic BlueSystem switches.
Solar panel system
3 separate panels of total 250 W are installed on the pilothouse roof, charging Service batteries through 3 regulators.
220V A.C. installation is supplied from shore 16A power connection or MasterVolt 1200 W inverter. Appliances are cabin outlets, water heater, battery charger, electric cooker and water purificator (see above).
Each cabin has 220V euro + 5V USB sockets. Complete renovation of electric installation was done in 2018.
NAVIGATION INSTRUMENTS
Raymarine navigation system with two chartplotters (at both steering stations)

SAFETY
Self-inflating life jackets. Ocean safety equipment (liferaft, flares, EPIRB).
SPARS
Silver anodized aluminium alloy spars with internal halyards and eliptical formed spreaders.
Main and mizzen masts stepped on deck. Main mast is fitted with slab reefing and lights (anchor, masthead, steaming and flood). Mizzen mast is fitted with cable for VHF aerial.
2 new Harken halyard winches on main mast.
Standing rigging is of 1 × 19 stainless steel wire; running rigging is of 7 × 19 stainless steel, both new in 2017. Internal halyards with rope tails, sheets 12 and 14 mm plaited rope.
Genoa sheet winches 2× Lewmar 16. Bottle screws and chain plates are of stainless steel.
INTERIOR
All interior joinery is of solid teak or teak plywood except the laminate surfaces of the galley and toilet compartments.
Carpeting, upholstery and curtains throughout. New cushions and beds (single and forecabin) in 2018.
FORECABIN
Two berths. Shelves and reading lights above the berths and storage space underneath. Aluminium alloy framed hatch with smoked translucent perspex (new 2018).
TOILET
Toilet on port side next to fore cabin. The toilet includes wash basin with pressure water, marine electric flushing WC, type Vetus WCPS, and black water holding tank Vetus WWS with capacity 42l.
Large mirror. Storage above and underneath wash basin.
SINGLE CABIN
Former dinette transformed to an enclosed single cabin. On port side a bar locker with a rack for bottles, mirror in the rear. Bookshelf.
GALLEY
Completely refurbished in 2018. New working desk, two stainless steel sinks and three burner gas + 1 electric stove with gas oven. Burners and oven have flame guards. Gas installation: one-piece copper pipe, flexible tubes at the bottle and stove. Shut off valves at stove.
Big compressor fridge cooled by seawater. Plenty of working space, several drawers, shelves and lockers. Drawers for crockery and glassware in cabinets.
WHEELHOUSE
Steering position with full instrumentation, compass, echo sounder etc. Settee for two persons, seat for one person. Folding tables on both sides.
Large navigation/chart table for full size charts, chart storage under the lid. Switchboard next to chart table. Locker for handbooks etc. All instruments as well as the switchboard and compass are lighted. Chart light and 4 white + 2 red lights on the ceiling.
Webasto heating unit fitted under the deck, storage for tools, life vests etc. under the deck.
Translucent sliding hatch. Two large sliding doors. Fire extinguishers.
AFT CABIN
The owner’s cabin has two single berths. Wardrobe. Headlight and reading lights. Plenty of storage space.
